It is the best of times:  scientists and humanists studying communication know they need each other.  It is the worst of times: what we expect of each other doesn’t match up. In this introduction to a special section of Poroi, I describe the problem and introduce a series of papers exploring projects that have overcome it. Each is characterized by a different “wedge”:  a different way of inserting rhetorical practice and research into the scientific enterprise.
